The fraction 1/100, or 1%, shows up when something happens once out of every hundred times. For example, a store might offer a 1% discount, or a survey might find that 1 out of 100 people chose a certain answer.
To picture 1%, imagine a grid with 100 equal squares and only one square shaded. It is a very small amount—about one person in a group of 100—so you can estimate it quickly by thinking “one out of a hundred.”
A common mistake is treating 1% as if it were the same as 1 out of 10, which would be 10%. Another point of confusion is forgetting that 1% of a large number can still be a significant amount, such as 1% of 10,000 being 100.
