A value of 1/4 comes up in everyday life when a recipe calls for a quarter cup of an ingredient or when a store advertises a 25% discount. It can also describe one out of four equal parts of a group.
To picture 1/4 quickly, imagine a pizza cut into four equal slices and take one slice. You can also estimate it as about one part in every four, or a little less than one-third.
One common point of confusion is assuming that 1/4 always means one item out of four, even when the items are not equal in size. A quarter of a large pizza is more food than a quarter of a small one, but each is still 1/4 of its whole.
