10/25 = 40%
A value like 40% can show up when a store marks an item down, when a team wins some of its games, or when a phone battery is partly used. For example, if 10 out of 25 students choose the same activity, that’s a little less than half the class.
To picture it quickly, imagine a group of 25 things and highlight 10 of them. Since half of 25 is a bit more than 10, the highlighted part is close to—but less than—half.
A common mix-up is thinking 40% means 40 out of 100 actual items, even when the group is smaller. It describes the same share of a whole, whether that whole has 25 things or 100.
