10/50 = 20%
A value like 10/50, or 20%, can show up in everyday life when one out of every five items fits a certain category. For example, if 10 of 50 students walk to school, the group’s walking rate is 20%.
You can picture 20% as one-fifth of a whole, or about two sections out of ten equal sections. It is also close to “20 out of 100,” which makes it easy to estimate when judging discounts, survey results, or progress toward a goal.
A common mistake is confusing 20% with 20 percentage points or with 20 items. The actual number of items depends on the total, so 20% of 50 is not the same amount as 20% of 500.
