A value like 11/40, or 27.5%, can show up in everyday life when a little more than one-quarter of a group has a certain feature. For example, if 11 out of 40 students walk to school, 11/40 of the class walks.
You can picture 11/40 as slightly more than one-fourth, since one-fourth is 25%. On a chart or group of 40 objects, shade 11 of them; that will look like a bit over a quarter of the whole.
A common mistake is to think 27.5% is closer to one-third than it really is. It is halfway between 25% and 30%, so it represents more than a quarter but noticeably less than one-third.
