You can picture 30% as 3 parts out of 10, or slightly less than one-third of a whole. A quick estimate is to imagine a group of 40 objects with about 12 of them shaded or selected.
A common mistake is thinking 30% means 30 out of 40, when it actually means 30 out of 100 or about 3 out of 10. It is also easy to confuse 30% with 0.30, but both describe the same portion.
