A value like 16/20, or 80%, shows up in everyday life when 16 out of 20 people answer a survey question the same way. It could also describe a test score, a sale discount, or the amount of a project that has been completed.
To picture 16/20 quickly, imagine a bar divided into five equal parts, with four parts filled in. That makes it easy to estimate as “about four-fifths,” which is a little less than the whole amount.
A common mistake is thinking that 80% means 80 out of 100 separate items must be present. It simply describes the same proportion, so 16 out of 20, 8 out of 10, and 80 out of 100 all represent the same amount.
