16/20 = 80%
A value like 80% shows up in everyday life when a student gets 16 out of 20 questions right, or when a store advertises a product as 80% full. It can also describe how much of a task is finished, such as packing most of a suitcase but leaving a few things out.
To picture 16/20 quickly, imagine 20 equal spaces, with 16 filled in and just 4 left empty. That’s close to a full set, but there’s still a noticeable one-fifth missing.
A common mistake is to think 80% means 80 out of 100 actual items, even when the total is different. The percentage describes the share of the total, so 16 out of 20 and 80 out of 100 represent the same proportion.
