A value like 18/30, or 60%, can show up in everyday life as a quiz score, a discount, or the portion of a class that chose a certain option. For example, if 18 out of 30 students bring lunch from home, that’s a little over half the class.
To picture 60% quickly, imagine a group of 10 equal parts: about 6 of them are included. It’s more than half, but not as much as two-thirds.
A common mistake is thinking 60% means 60 out of 100 items, even when the total is different. The percentage describes the share of the whole, so 18 out of 30 and 60 out of 100 represent the same proportion.
