A value like 2/16, or 12.5%, can show up in everyday life when a small part of a group is being described. For example, if 2 out of 16 students are absent, 2 out of 16 slices of pizza are left, or 2 of 16 items are defective, the amount is 12.5% of the whole.
To picture 12.5% quickly, think of one-eighth of something. It is a little more than one-tenth, so you can imagine a small slice of a group rather than a large share. In a group of 16, two items would represent this amount.
A common mistake is thinking that 2/16 is 2% because the numerator is 2. The 16 matters just as much: the fraction compares 2 parts with a total of 16 parts, so the portion is larger than 2% but still fairly small.
