To picture 40% quickly, imagine 4 out of 10 equal parts shaded. It’s a little less than half, so you can estimate it as close to—but not quite—50%.
A common mix-up is thinking that 40% means 40 out of any group, no matter its size. It means 40 out of 100, or the same share of a group with a different total.
