3/100 = 3%
A value of 3% can show up in everyday life as a small sales tax, a discount, or the chance of rain in a weather forecast. It can also describe a few items in a large group, such as a small share of products being damaged.
To picture it quickly, imagine 100 dots in a row: 3% means just 3 of them are marked. It’s a small slice, about three out of every hundred.
A common mix-up is treating 3% as if it means 3 out of 10, which is much larger. Keep the “out of 100” idea in mind, and it’s easier to see how small the amount is.
