A value like 3/25, or 12%, can show up in everyday life when a store offers a discount or a survey reports how many people chose an option. It can also describe a small part of a group, such as three students out of a class of 25.
To picture it quickly, think of a little more than one out of every ten items. In a group of 100, that would be about 12 items.
A common point of confusion is treating 12% as the same as 12 percentage points. For example, a change from 20% to 32% is an increase of 12 percentage points, not a 12% increase.
