To picture it quickly, imagine a group of 10 equal parts: about 8 are included and 2 are left out. You can also think of it as roughly four-fifths of a whole, like filling most of a glass while leaving a small space at the top.
One common mix-up is treating 80% as the amount that remains after an 80% discount. An 80% discount means 80% is taken off, so only 20% of the original price is left to pay.
