A value like 44/40 shows up when something reaches more than its original target or limit. For example, a student might finish 44 questions when 40 were assigned, or a store might sell 44 items after expecting to sell 40, reaching 110% of the goal.
To picture 44/40 quickly, think of one whole group of 40 plus 4 extra parts from that same group. Since 4 is one-tenth of 40, the value is a little more than one whole, or about 1.1 times the original amount.
A common mistake is assuming that a percentage over 100% must be wrong. Here, 110% simply means the amount is 10% higher than the full reference amount, not that the fraction is impossible or less than one.
