A value of 70% might show up as a discount, a test score, or the amount of a phone battery left. It tells you that the amount is more than half, but not quite three-quarters.
To picture it quickly, imagine 70 out of 100 squares shaded on a grid. You can also think of it as about seven out of every ten items, which makes it easy to estimate in a group.
One common mix-up is treating 70% as the same as 70 percentage points. A score rising from 20% to 70% increases by 50 percentage points, even though the increase is much larger when measured relative to the original score.
