A value of 51/60, or 85%, might describe a test score, a phone battery level, or how much of a task is finished. It means most of the whole is there, with a smaller part still missing.
To picture it quickly, imagine a bar split into ten equal sections, with about eight and a half filled. Since 85% is close to nine out of ten, you can think of it as just a little less.
A common mix-up is thinking that 85% means 85 out of 60, rather than 85 out of every 100. Also, a high percentage does not always mean a large amount: 85% of a tiny snack is still a small amount.
