A value like 59/125, or 47.2%, can show up when nearly half of a group chooses the same option. For example, it could describe the share of students who ride the bus, customers who prefer a certain product, or survey participants who agree with a statement.
To picture 47.2% quickly, think of 50%, or one-half, and notice that it is a little less. On a group of 100 items, it would look like 47 items plus a small part of another item.
A common mistake is to call 47.2% “about 47%” without noticing whether the extra 0.2 percentage points matter in context. Also, 47.2% is less than half, even though it is close to 50%.
