You can picture 18/50 as a little more than one-third of a group. In a group of 50 objects, imagine shading 18 of them; the shaded section would be clearly less than half but more than a quarter.
A common mistake is thinking 36% is close to one-half because it is a fairly large part of the whole. It is actually 14 percentage points below 50%, so the unshaded or remaining portion is larger.
