2/10 = 20%
A value like 2/10, or 20%, shows up in everyday life when a store offers a discount, a teacher says you have completed part of an assignment, or one out of every five people chooses something. It can also describe chances, such as a weather forecast giving a 20% chance of rain.
To picture 2/10 quickly, imagine a row of 10 equal boxes with 2 of them shaded. You can also think of it as about one-fifth, which makes it easy to estimate without needing exact measurements.
A common mistake is thinking 20% means 20 out of 20, when it actually represents 2 parts out of 10 or 1 part out of 5. Another point of confusion is that a 20% discount does not mean the final price is 20% of the original; it means 20% is taken away.
