A value like 8/10, or 80%, shows up in everyday life when most but not all of something is complete. For example, you might finish 8 out of 10 homework problems, answer 8 out of 10 questions correctly, or have 80% of your phone battery left.
You can picture 8/10 as a row of 10 equal parts with 8 shaded and 2 unshaded. It is also easy to estimate as about four-fifths, which is a little less than the whole amount.
A common mistake is thinking that 8/10 is the same as 8%, because both numbers appear in the fraction. The denominator 10 represents the total number of equal parts, so 8/10 means 8 parts out of 10, not 8 parts out of 100.
